Astrol Petroleum was founded in 2000 by Murang’a-born entrepreneur Thayu Kamau Kabugi, who built it into a respected Kenyan-owned oil-marketing company [whownsafrica.com]. Kabugi, a disciplined and community-focused leader—honored with the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) award in 2017—led the company until his passing in February 2019 [biznakenya.com].
Today, under Managing Director James Mwangi, Astrol operates 10–14 company-owned filling stations, mainly in Nairobi and its environs (including Mombasa Road, Thika Road, Runda, Ruiru, Murang’a, Utawala, Athi River) [biznakenya.com]. Owning the land and avoiding franchising allows Astrol to reduce overhead and offer a consistent price discount (around KES 5/litre) while maintaining high-quality fuel—recent independent testing verified a Pump Octane Number (PON) of 91, outperforming some premium brands [marketing.ke].
Astrol’s stations go beyond refuelling—they offer car washes, engine checks, tyre services, convenience retail, and bulk fuel delivery via a branded truck fleet [marketing.ke]. The company employs over 300 people, living by its core values of integrity, trust, respect, and servant leadership [whownsafrica.com].
Astrol continues to expand with plans to open one to two new stations annually, aiming to deepen its footprint in Kenya’s competitive petroleum market [marketing.ke].
